Becoming a Teacher Online
Primary and secondary teacher jobs and training are abundant. Great teachers are needed in many areas and primary and secondary teaching jobs can be attained with only a four-year degree. Although teacher certification is different in every state and country, there are now some great options to get trained online. Online programs are helping many people to get the degrees or certifications they need to become quality educators in many regions, subjects, and levels. It’s never to soon or too late to consider a career in education at any level!
A four year degree in primary education (k-5 or k-6, depending on the state) will consist of classes on multiple subjects related to a primary education, such as grade school level math, science, reading, writing and social studies. A primary school educator must be proficient enough to inform students and guide them in these subjects based on a standard for learning set by the state that the educator wishes to teach in. Those who already hold a bachelors degree may be able to enter a teaching career via teaching internship. The best way to find out and understand what credentials are necessary for teaching in your state, is to go to your state’s website and look up teacher licensing standards.
To be a secondary school educator (grades 6-12 or 7-12th depending on state) a single subject teaching credential is required. This is a credential provided by a college or university in the subject an educator wishes to teach. Not all teachers must be limited to one subject; a double major in college may result in a four year degree allowing a person to teach multiple subjects at the high school level. Again, all rules and paths to teaching vary slightly from state to state.
By the time a teaching position is established, educators will have completed a four-year program that includes student teaching, and, or, assistant teaching with hands-on experience. Getting into the classroom should, therefore, not be a major shock. Teachers then need to put together a teaching outline for how the year will proceed while keeping state standards for learning in mind. These standards will vary by state, by age of students, and by subject. It is up to a teacher to be familiar with these standards and have a good idea of what kind of education tools and strategies are allowed in public education. A private school’s teaching standards may deviate from those of the state, but even private schools have to comply with certain educational standards to be recognized as legitimate education centers.
Good teachers will always be necessary and degrees are very available via online or traditional learning centers. If you sign on to an online program, make sure it is accredited.
If you have chosen to teach you have picked a great career path. Find out what you need to do to attain teaching credentials in your state, educate yourself, and, finally, educate your students well.
